Why Isn’t My Heat Pump Cooling My House?

Heat pumps are great HVAC systems, offering your home both heating and cooling. There are some specialized mechanics that make this happen, and like any other heating or cooling system, sometimes problems can arise that affect your heat pump’s ability to cool. While it may be tempting to poke around and see what’s happening with your heat pump in Wyckoff, NJ, it’s important to allow a trained expert to inspect your heat pump and see what’s happening. The heat pump experts at Design Air, Inc., can help you with all of your heat pump repair needs – just give us a call.

Reasons for Lack of Cooling

Here are some of the more common reasons why your heat pump may not be cooling as needed:

A Dirty Air Filter

It may seem strange that such a simple component can reduce your heat pump’s cooling output, let alone stop your heat pump from cooling altogether, but it can and will. Your heat pump needs a certain amount of air flow to operate, and a clogged air filter will block air moving through the system. Once the air flow is restricted, you are likely to see problems with your cooling.

A Refrigerant Leak

Refrigerant is the chemical in your system that helps facilitate the transfer of heat. Heat pumps cool and heat by transferring heat from one location to another, and an exact amount of refrigerant is needed for your heat pump system. When a leak develops, the level of the refrigerant is reduced, and problems develop with the heat release/cooling process in your system.

Thermostat Issues

Your thermostat is the control center for your heat pump system. As such, a malfunctioning thermostat will most certainly have an effect on your cooling, as will changes in programming, such as accidentally putting your heat pump into heating mode instead of cooling mode.
