Refrigerant is the substance that your air conditioner uses to transfer heat. This allows the system to “create” that nice cool comfort that you were looking for. Without refrigerant, your air conditioner is nothing more than a large and extremely expensive fan.
What it Means When You are Losing Refrigerant
There is a misconception that some people have that your AC uses up refrigerant over time. This isn’t true as you probably had guessed by now. Your system is set up with enough refrigerant at the exact pressure required to do its job until it ends its lifespan.
So, if you are losing refrigerant, it means that your system has a leak somewhere in its refrigerant line. While a leak is a somewhat common problem that many people encounter, it is never a good one. A refrigerant leak needs to be resolved ASAP to prevent major issues down the line.

- Increased energy bills: Less refrigerant makes it harder for your AC to cool the home which it will compensate for by sucking up extra energy.
