We don’t have to tell you how muggy it can get in the summer here in Ramsey, NJ. It’s only May and we’ve already begun to feel the effects. Soon, it will be like stepping out of your home into a solid wall of humidity, and the last thing you want is to have that kind of discomfort in your home. Air conditioners can address the problem by default, but they’re not set up to do that and often need a great deal of extra energy to keep a handle on high humidity. That raises both your bills and the possibility of a more serious repair. A whole-house dehumidifier is a better answer to the issue, and can even save you money in the right circumstances.
Problems Cause by High Humidity
Our bodies keep cool naturally by sweating. More specifically, we cool down when the sweat evaporates off of our skin. But when humidity levels are too high—usually when relative humidity hits about 50% or so—then there’s too much ambient moisture in the air to let that happen. We thus feel hotter than we should and the sweat on our skin feels clammy and gross. On top of that, high humidity fosters the growth of germs and bacteria in your home, which can cause illnesses in your family.
Dehumidifiers Solve It
Dehumidifiers lower the temperature of the air just like air conditioners do. But they do so with an eye on getting rid of excess moisture instead of reaching a particular temperature. The ambient moisture coalesces into liquid at a particular point, depending on the current temperature and relative humidity levels. A dehumidifier simply cools the air until that happens, then collects the droplets in a container set up for that purpose. Your home feels more comfortable and your air conditioner is put under considerably less strain.
