HVAC Suggestions and Expectations for Extreme Heat

Thursday, July 18th, 2019

We are expecting an extreme heatwave this weekend. Outdoor temperatures are supposed to soar well above the normal air conditioning systems design temperature.  We here at Design Air want to be sure that our customers stay safe and take any and all precautions through this heatwave. In case of emergency, Design Air is here for you!

Here are our suggestions for keeping your home as cool as possible through the oppressive heat.

  1. During an extreme heatwave, it is best to leave your system set at your desired indoor temperature and to put it in hold mode. DO NOT use your energy-saving program. DO NOT turn your system off or raise the temp if you leave the house for a few hours or even for the day. The system will not be able to recover and bring down the temperature.
  2. Pull shades to limit direct sunlight, keep outside doors shut and confirm ALL windows, (bathrooms, downstairs, upstairs, basements, etc.), are closed tightly.  The slightest window gap will allow humidity in and use all of the air conditioner’s power to remove the humidity, instead of, working on lowering the temperature.
  3. If you have more than one air conditioner cooling your house, make sure ALL units are set to cool, so that one system is not trying to cool the whole house.
  4. Make sure you have a clean filter.
  5. DO NOT add heat to your house, minimize the use of the oven, stove, lights, washer, dryer, and computers.
  6. BATHROOMS: try not to add heat and humidity from showers or baths. Close the bathroom door and run the bath exhaust fan while showering. If possible, minimize shower and bath time.

PLEASE KEEP IN MIND: Central air conditioning systems are designed to maintain roughly a 20° differential between outdoor temperatures and indoor temperatures. This is fine when the outdoor temperatures rise to 90° – 92°, systems should still maintain 70° – 72° inside the home. When outdoor temperatures rise to 100° the indoor temperatures may also rise above the desired setting. On a 100° day, during the peak heat of the day and a few hours after, the indoor temperature may rise to 80° and the system may still be operating properly. It just cannot keep up with the extreme temperatures outside and that is normal.

Please be safe and smart during this heatwave.  Please avoid prolonged or heavy exertion outdoors and remember to stay hydrated!

checklistThe size of your air conditioning system really does matter. If you’re looking to install a new air conditioning system in your home it’s important to make sure that this system is sized correctly. If it’s too small, your air conditioning system won’t be able to cool your home the way you need it to. The process used to determine the proper size of an air conditioning system for your home is complex. It’s easy to find online resources claiming to walk you through everything you need to know when it comes to sizing an AC system, but it’s difficult to do this probably without professional assistance.
