Monday, January 21st, 2013

Have you ever opened your utility bill and been shocked by the amount of money that you spent to keep your Suffern, NY home warm? When that happens, many of us decide to start looking into ways to reduce our energy consumption. At Design Air, Inc., we offer a comprehensive line-up of some of the most advanced green energy solutions for your home. We thought it would be helpful for our customers if we put together a short list of some of the green options that are available to heat your home in Suffern, NY.

Solar Energy

Solar panels are an incredibly popular in Suffern, NY. They allow homeowners to harness the energy of the sun to run the electric heating system in their home. Here’s how they work:

  • The photovoltaic (PV) panel – The PV panel uses a series of panels that made out of a special kind of silicone. As solar radiation strikes the solar panels, electrons are knocked off of the silicone and captured by a series of circuits. The electrons create a direct current that is then transformed into alternating current by an inverter.

While solar panels are a terrific way to provide free and unlimited electricity to your home, they are not without their drawbacks. Obviously, solar panels need sunlight. While solar systems work well during the summer, during the winter when the sun is out for shorter periods of time or when there are storm clouds, they may not work as well.

Geothermal Systems

Unlike solar panels that use direct sunlight, geothermal systems take advantage of renewable energy that is stored in the ground. If you were to dig down about 10 feet into the ground, the temperature there would be around 55° F. It stays that way no matter what the temperature of the air is above ground. Geothermal systems take advantage of that consistency. Here’s how they do it:

  • Ground loop – A series of coils are buried in the ground and filled with refrigerant.
  • Heat pump – A heat pump inside your home circulates the fluid through the ground to absorb heat.
  • Heat exchanger – The newly heated refrigerant is pumped through a heat exchanger.
  • Blower – The fan in the heat pump, blows cool air from your home across the heat exchanger to heat it.
  • Air Ducts – The hot air is delivered to each of your rooms through your ductwork.

Similar to solar panels, geothermal systems also have their limitations. In areas with extreme cold conditions, they occasionally need back-up heating systems.

3 Signs Your Furnace Needs Repairs in Suffern

Monday, January 14th, 2013

Furnaces typically provide consistent and comfortable heating for homes in Suffern. But like everything else in this world, it eventually needs repairs. But some people don’t know when it’s time to call a heating contractor for service. Design Air has been offering furnace repair services in the Suffern area for many years. We thought it would be helpful for our community if we put together the top 3 repairs that we service.

Air Flow Issues

This is a common issue that we deal with on service calls. This happens when you turn your furnace on but only a small amount of air comes out of your registers. Here are some common causes:

  • Clogged air filter – A dirty air filter can cause a ton of problems for your furnace and low air flow is definitely one of them.
  • Blower – The blower is the fan that pushes the heated air through your duct work. If the fan’s belt, bearings or motor aren’t in good working order, you may be experiencing low air flow.

Strange Sounds and Flame

Your furnace can make sounds when it operates and this is normal. However, there are some sounds that you’ll want to watch out for as they can be an indication of a dangerous problem. You’ll also want to watch the flames on your furnace if you have a gas-fired furnace as this can be an indication of the same dangerous issue.

  • Rattling sound – If your furnace is making a rattling sound it could be loose screws or covering on the furnace. However, it might also be that the heat exchanger in your furnace is cracked. The heat exchanger is designed to heat the air and also exhaust dangerous combustion fumes. If it is cracked, those fumes might be getting sent out into your home.
  • Yellow, wiggling flame – The flame on your furnace should be blue. But if you notice that it has turned yellow or has started to wiggle, this can also be an indication that your heat exchanger is cracked.

The thermostat for your home in Suffern is what tells the furnace to turn on or off. Obviously, if this breaks it can cause a lot of problems.

  • No heat or low heat – If your furnace isn’t providing enough heat or no heat at all, it might be the thermostat. You should check to make sure that the pilot light or igniter is working correctly and that the furnace is lit.

If you’re having any of these furnace problems in your Suffern home, contact Design Air. We have experience working with all types of furnace problems. Our technicians are trained to work on all types and brands of furnaces. Give us a call today!

The Importance of Accurate Load Calculations: Suffern, NY Heating Tip

Monday, January 7th, 2013

When you are planning to purchase a new home comfort system in Suffern, NY, whether it is a heating or air conditioning system, it is necessary that you enlist a highly qualified, skilled professional service provider to perform an accurate heating or cooling load calculation. This is the only way to ensure that your new home comfort system will be able to efficiently and effectively perform its function. Design Air has some information for you to consider about what a load calculation is, when you need one and why it is so important when scheduling the installation of a new heating or air conditioning system in your Suffern, NY home. If you have any further questions regarding load calculations or would like to schedule load calculation service, contact us for more information.

What is a Load Calculation?

A load calculation is essentially the process by which the correct size of an air conditioning or heating system is determined in order for it to perform its function properly in your home. Without an accurate load calculation you will likely wind up with a system that is either too big or too small for your home heating and air conditioning needs. Neither is desirable. By taking into account a number of factors including the layout in your home, insulation conditions, square footage, exposure to sunlight and the number of windows your load calculation expert will be able to accurately determine the necessary size of the new home comfort system. This will allow you to heat and cool your home in an effective, efficient manner.

When Should I Schedule a Load Calculation?

It does not matter if you are purchasing a new heating or air conditioning system for the first time or if you are replacing an old system. If a new system is being installed in your home a load calculation is necessary. Factors change, technology changes, and even if you can provide your heating and cooling service provider with the make and model of your existing system a new load calculation should be completed. Just because your last system worked does not mean that it worked as well as possible.

Who Should I Call for My Load Calculation Service in Suffern, NY?

For homeowners in the Suffern, NY area, Design Air, Inc. is the company to call for all your load calculation needs. Let us help you heat and air condition your home effectively and efficiently. Call today to schedule service.
